Maki or as sushi natives call it, makizushi, is the most common type of sushi. Maki is the rice cylinder with nori, seaweed, filled most often with fish such as crab, tuna, salmon, and yellowtail. As I talk about in the Americanization of Sushi, vegetables and fruits were later added to appease the American eye and to make sushi less expensive to make.

There are several types of maki. One type is hosomaki which only has 1 ingredient. The one ingredient most typically is fish but can sometimes be a nut, vegetable, or a fruit. Another specific type of maki is futomaki which is a roll with a diameter of 5 or 6 centimeters. Uramaki is also a type of maki that is like an inside out maki roll. With Uramaki, the rice is on the outside instead of the inside. It is one of the ways that sushi was Americanized.
